Infectious Disease Epidemiology
Epidemiological studies on the burden, transmission dynamics, and control of infectious diseases across African populations — including HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and emerging infections.
IPHI Research conducts rigorous epidemiological research across infectious and non-communicable diseases. With over 200 peer-reviewed publications, our work informs health policy, strengthens surveillance systems, and addresses the most pressing population health challenges facing the continent.
Our research spans six core thematic areas, each addressing critical gaps in population health evidence across Africa.
Epidemiological studies on the burden, transmission dynamics, and control of infectious diseases across African populations — including HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and emerging infections.
Research on the rising burden of NCDs in Africa — cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory conditions — with a focus on prevention, early detection, and health systems readiness.
Investigating the drivers, surveillance, and interventions for antimicrobial resistance across African health systems. Our work supports global AMR stewardship efforts and informs national action plans.
Evidence generation on tobacco use patterns, harm reduction strategies, and smoking cessation interventions in African contexts — contributing to global tobacco control policy discourse.
Evaluating health system performance, health financing, workforce capacity, and policy implementation to strengthen primary healthcare delivery across the continent.
Research on pandemic preparedness, disease surveillance infrastructure, and health security frameworks — building Africa's capacity to detect, prevent, and respond to health threats.
Our team has contributed over 200 peer-reviewed publications to the global health evidence base. Below is a selection of our recent work.

Oxford University-trained epidemiologist and doctoral researcher at the University of Glasgow. Yusuff has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on infectious disease epidemiology, tobacco harm reduction, antimicrobial resistance, and global health policy. He leads the research strategy and partnerships for IPHI Research.
IPHI Research works with a network of research associates and collaborators across African universities and global health institutions. If you are a researcher interested in joining our network, get in touch.
