About the grant

The final-year project is often a pharmacy student’s first real piece of research. Too many strong projects stall for lack of funds, and most are never published.

The PIH Research Grant changes that. We fund two outstanding final-year projects that answer a real question about improving health, healthcare delivery, health services or public health — and we support each awardee to publish their work as first author in a peer-reviewed journal.

Who can apply

You can apply if you:

  • are an undergraduate pharmacy student (B.Pharm or Pharm.D) at a Faculty or School of Pharmacy in Nigeria accredited by the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria
  • are in your final year in the 2026/2027 session
  • are the lead investigator on your own final-year research project
  • have started your project, or are about to start it — data collection must not be complete
  • have a supervisor who will support your application in a signed letter
  • have ethical approval, or have applied for it, where your study needs it
One application per student. Group projects may apply once, through one lead student who will be first author.
Not eligible: postgraduate students, graduates, students of other health courses, and projects that are completed or already fully funded.

What we fund

Your research must answer a question whose answer can directly improve health, healthcare delivery, health services or public health. Laboratory, formulation or phytochemical projects qualify only if they show a clear path to patient or population benefit.

We especially welcome projects on:

  • antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship
  • access to, and quality and affordability of, medicines
  • rational medicine use and medication safety
  • pharmaceutical care, community pharmacy and primary care
  • non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer and mental health
  • infectious diseases, including malaria, HIV, tuberculosis and vaccination
  • tobacco, alcohol and substance use
  • maternal, child and adolescent health
  • health systems, health policy and digital health

The grant can pay for

Data collection, research assistants, laboratory consumables, ethics fees, analysis software, article processing charges and conference registration.

It cannot pay for

Tuition, personal upkeep or supervisor honoraria.

How we select

Every application is checked for eligibility and complete documents. Eligible proposals are then scored independently by at least two reviewers. There are no interviews. Reviewers do not score proposals from their own institution.

Because we expect a large number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
